​Celebrating the Agricultural Impacts of 1890 Land-grant Universities

USDA has a long history of investing in and supporting our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Established under the Second Morrill Act of 1890, these 19 HBCUs, along with the two HBCU land-grant universities established in the original 1862 legislation – University of the District of Columbia and University of the Virgin Islands – are a critical link in ensuring public access to agricultural education, research and outreach programs are equitably distributed to all Americans. USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) supports research at these institutions with both capacity and competitive funding.

Researchers Discover Biomarkers Needed to Help Peanuts Beat the Heat

Heat stress caused by climate change is threatening to reduce peanut crop yields. A group of researchers led by Clemson University Plant and Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Sruthi Narayanan is working to develop heat-tolerant peanut varieties they hope will help maintain peanut production and profitability.

Social Implications of Food and Agriculture Technologies

This program area priority within the Agriculture Economics and Rural Communities (AERC) program area supports the examination of the social implications of technology as a form of technology assessment that anticipates the unforeseen and unintended consequences of technological innovation, including cultural, health, welfare, equity, ethical, and environmental impacts. A critical lesson learned from past experiences with the application of scientific discoveries and technological innovations to agricultural production is that public trust in science begins with, and requires ongoing transparency and open deliberation. Technologies such as gene drives and genome editing, big data, and autonomous technologies and systems have tremendous capability in shaping the future of agriculture, requiring the scientific community to develop effective means of communicating and engaging with the public.

Applicants are encouraged to use the checklist applicable to ensure all elements of their application have been included prior to sending to NIFA by the application deadline. Review the Request for Applications (RFA) for information regarding deadlines, application form requirements, evaluation criteria and other information that is pertinent to the success of an application.
